From January - December 2025, I was a Surfacing and Technical Artist for an animated short called The Kraken's Tooth. The short was created as part of a class at University of Texas at Dallas called Animation Lab. I helped develop the surfacing style, under the guidance of Professors Monika Salter and Casey Johnson and surfaced the Kraken, the bones, and various other models in the short as well as creating some scripts for the surfacing team.
I had also created a few scripts for the surfacing team, one which assigned a material and gave it a random color so the lighting team could test if materials were coming through the pipeline, and another was a smoothing script that sets the selected geometry to display as smoothed when rendering. Both of these scripts allowed these tasks to move a lot faster than doing them manually would take.
The kraken was broken down into separate body parts as the final short never shows the full body at once- the tentacles, the eye, and the beak.
